Abstract:The author first analyzed the characteristics of Orff Schulwerk. He proposed that this approach would be one solution to the problems in demographics, language, and attitudes in South Africa between the minority Europeans and majority black Africans. The nature of Orff Schulwerk would cut across differences in background and allow using indigenous African materials in a meaningful way. Several African songs were analyzed to indicate how Schulwerk approach can be used as well as what limitations they present.
Results/Conclusions:The use of Orff Schulwerk approach would be most beneficial in South African schools. Indigenous African songs can be used in this approach as long as one understands the music materials and their limitations.
Keywords:Cultural suitability, Indigenous tradition
