Abstract:The purpose of the study to examine the local grassroots development of Orff Schulwerk in northeast, Ohio, mainly attributable to the formation and growth of the Greater Chapter of AOSA, the first Orff Schulwerk chapter chartered in the US. This research address the events and factors that led to the introduction and formation, spread, growth of Orff Schulwerk in northeast Ohio Region and what individuals involved. How select individuals affiliated with the Cleveland chapter spread and promoted Orff Schulwerk was additionally examined along with the impact the Cleveland Chapter has had on music education in NE Ohio. Data were collected and analyzed from a substantial number of primary and secondary documents. Published primary sources include articles, books, conference programs, interviews, photographs, reports, workshop notes, and brochures.
Results/Conclusions:Conclusions are that the efforts of Ruth Pollack Hamm and Betty Jane Lahman and others had impact on the Greater Cleveland Chapter. That the proliferation of OS by way of the Cleveland Chapter was accomplished through presenter and chapter sharing workshops, professional partnerships with music education and music industry organizations, the establishment of OS training courses throughout the region.
Implications for music education (continued research):This study is an excellent model for anyone interested in a historical study in OS. The purpose and scope are clear and data includes archive documents, pictures, interviews and survey.
