Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in the growth of musical creativity in third grade music students. Two class (N=21) with (n=7) in each class were taught through the use of the Orff Schulwerk process and the other taught by a more traditional method. A twelve week period was devoted to the experiment in teaching the third grade concepts. The dependant measure was Webster's Measure of Creative Thinking in Music.
Results/Conclusions:Pre and Post test scores by means of a Mann - Whitney U test yielded statistically significant differences in the sub score of musical flexibility but none in any of the others, musical extensiveness, musical originality and musical syntax.
Implications for music education (continued research):An experimental look at the topic of creativity using the Orff Schulwerk and a traditional approach. The fact that this was conducted over a twelve week period is important. In addition to the quantitative data journals were kept.
