Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the course content of the elementary music methods courses being taught at nine Midwestern universities. Elementary music methods instructors at these institutions completed a web-based survey in which they provided demographic information, as well as information on the inclusion of major music methods and the various components of the course content.
Results/Conclusions:Results indicated that Kodaly and Orff Schulwerk were the two teaching approaches most frequently presented; lesson planning and singing were the content areas with the greatest teaching emphasis; and assessment was most often conducted through tests and portfolios.
