Abstract:Students (n=34) enrolled in an music methods class were randomly placed in the Workbook group or teacher-instruction group to learn about Orff Schulwerk. The workbook was created by the researcher for student self-study and activities. Same objectives and orders were used for both groups. Students were pre-tested to ascertain that there was no initial difference in musical knowledge. After the three-week study, they were videotaped for their performance and improvisation, and completed self-surveys and written tests. The video tapes were scored by three judges and their average scores were used for analysis.
Results/Conclusions:Results indicated student scores were not different whether they studied the workbook or received instruction from the teacher. Students who scored higher in the workbook exam also scored higher at the comprehensive test. Students in both groups were positive about learning the Orff approach.
Implications for music education (continued research):Workbooks can be used successfully for familiarizing college students about the Orff Schulwerk approach.
