Abstract:The purpose of this study was to identify existing music teaching strategies and usages in Ghanaian elementary schools and consequently provide suggestions for integrating indigenous methods with contemporary approaches in Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly approach. Teachers of music in five of ten regions in Ghana were asked to report their teaching strategies in a 34-item questionnaire. Fifty-six responses were collected and analyzed.
Results/Conclusions:Results indicate that existing strategies used include singing games, vocables, solfege, speech, poetry, movement and dance. Strategies and teacher background differed among regions. It would be feasible to incorporate contemporary approaches of Orff and Kodaly and Ghanaian indigenous music in developing a curriculum for formal music education.
